- Get an ABN and understand that you'll now have to take a little more care of your finances.
- Save your expenses, and understand when you'll need to register for GST/set up a company.
- A good accountant always helps!
- Have savings! Set up a safety net. Usually your starting months are the slowest, so save at least 3 months worth of rent/expenses if you can. More is better!
- Polish your reel/portfolio! It's the most important thing you can do to get hired.
- Get a website if you haven't already. If you have, spend some time filling out your portfolio.
- Figure out your rate!
- Try freelancing on the side of your current job. It can be exhausting doing two things at once, but it gets you in the swing of dealing with emails and people.
- Think about if you want to contract to studios, work direct with client or both. They all have their advantages and disadvantages.
- Be prepared for unexpected time off, and know that it's not a reflection on you or your skills. Getting work is sometimes just right place, right time.
- Make sure your equipment is in good shape, and upgrade/get anything you need.
- Reach out/cold-email to potential clients, studios and former colleagues to let them know you're going freelance. (in a way that doesn't void any non-solicitation clauses you may have signed)
- Talk to fellow freelancers! They always have good advice.
- Be prepared to SET BOUNDARIES! On your hours, days of work, time, what you will accept. Getting good at saying no to crossed boundaries will help you build a sustainable freelance career
